    Helix – Make em Dance
This past year, the classic ‘80’s lineup of the band got back together to record an album and tour the country. They even made a stop into the Fox-Hole for a chat and performance. The resulting album, Vagabond Bones, is probably some of their best material since the 80’s and it throws a bit of nostalgia at you while updating to modern times. Make ‘em Dance is a prime example.

    Drowning Pool-Feel Like I Do
Probably best known for their song “Bodies” (as in…let the bodies hit the floor…) these guys have had a rough go with singers. Their first singer passes away; the next guy quit; the newest singer is hoping to take over and carry on the hard rock and help keep the adrenaline pumping…seems to have worked on this one.

Stereo Airing  - Feel this Good
Fredericton’s own resident sweet-heart, Chris “Skinner” MacLean (of OnVinyl fame), has a new band and a new EP to share with the world. The EP will be out soon, and you can catch the band performing at the Cellar on Feb. 20th. Sound wise it’s got a bit of an early-Sloan vibe with catchy hooks and vocals…if you liked On Vinyl, you’ll like these guys.

    Theory Of A Deadman-Little Smirk
If it ain’t broke, why fix it? I’m pretty sure that’s the mentality within this band, as they prove once again that their version of somewhat spiteful angry rock is working for them. This is the kind of rocker one would expect from these three bad asses from BC.

    Three Days Grace-The Good Life
Another band with a mold that’s working for them is 3DG. Their latest album, Life Starts Now is full of that hard hitting, grinding rock, of which they’ve become synonymous. Although, lyrically, this one is a little less angry; giving a positive spin about enjoying your life…hence, the Good life.

Cage The Elephant-Back Against The Wall
Cage the Elephant kind of mix some Racontuers-like stuff with a bit of post-grunge 90’s style. Their debut album was one of the highlights of last year’s music releases (for me, anyway) and this is yet another representation of why they should be destined for good things. Check out the video too…it kinda reminds me of Heart Shaped Box.

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: If you don’t really have a dog in the fight, so to speak (with regard to the Superbowl) …cheer for whoever your buddy is against…it’s fun.

    Foo Fighters-Word/Forward
When Dave Grohl first recorded a demo that would turn into the first Foo Fighters album, he did so because he had all these songs that he’d amassed and thought maybe a few people would be into them and that’d be it…15 years later, Foo Fighters is one of the biggest rock bands around, and they released their first ever Greatest hits collection in November. Among the bands Greatest Hits, were two brand new, yet very Foo-like songs. One was Wheels…the other: Word/Forward. Enjoy.

    Glo-Move Along
Glo, from Montreal, was named “Best Out of Province Rock band” a the 2007 Toronto Independent Music Awards. This song is a pretty catchy ballad; the chorus is really infectious and you’ll be able to find it on their upcoming album, On The Outside, due this Spring.

30 Seconds To Mars-Kings And Queens
Jared Leto played Angel Face in Fight Club…and I will forever associate him with acting (that role in particular, among others) However, like his costar in Fight Club, Leto is also a singer (Metloaf was the reference there…remember Bob?) This is Leto’s band, and he exhibits some great vocal abilities, especially on this song. In fact, I think my favourite element of this song is the vocal performance. It, like the song is dynamic, and infectious.

    Crash Kings-Mountain Man
This band combines my nickname with King…how can I not like this? This song seems to be Jack White influenced, (which is yet another reason for me to like it.) kinda sounding like something that was on The White Stripes album, Get Behind Me Satan. I can get behind that…

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: If you tell your fiancé you’re going to grow your hair and beard out for the 5 months leading up to your wedding…you’ll most likely be threatened….

    Hollerado – Julliette
For a relatively new band, they’ve certainly seen their share of success. They formed in 2007 and have made a name for themselves winning a few competitions in both Ontario and Quebec; even touring with Montreal band, The Stills. Jack White even picked them to open for his band The Dead Weather... and I don’t know about you, but I trust Jack White’s musical opinion. This song is ridiculously catchy (in the same vein as that of a Weezer song.)

Matthew good – Us Remains Impossible
At face value, this could be an anthem for Matt & the Olympics.... (he’s not a fan, to say the least) but, in listening to the lyical content, it’s a bit deeper than that. This is the latest song from his Vancouver album, which carries on his trademark orchestral arrangements and deep, personal lyrics – which in this song could just as easily be about a relationship with a person, or the city in which He’s lived his whole life; another solid offering from a Canadian icon.

    Nickelback – Shakin’ Hands
Nickelback have made a living by either being really sweet and sensitive…or variably dirty and not so tongue-in-cheek. This would be the latter. It’s the kind of straight forward rock song you’ve come to expect form the band; at this point, you’ll either love it or hate it.

Airbourne – No way But The Hard Way
Not doing anything to assuage (I know, big word for me right?) the ACDC comparisons, this one is another amped up rock song that will force you to turn up the tunes…and turn up the party… (I’m sorry for the cheese…I just really like it sometimes…haha)

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: Cheesiness, with the right degree of irony can be…only slightly less cheesy…

Feels Good @ The Fox. Air Date: Dec. 17, 2009
  • December 16, 2009

    Pearl Jam – Just Breathe
This, among a few songs on the band’s latest release (Backspacer) could’ve easily been included on Eddie Vedder’s solo album, Into The Wild. This is a simple acoustic number bolstered by his powerful baritone which evokes the kind of emotion that is lacking in a lot of mainstream music today. Backspacer gets my vote as one of the best of 2009.

    Puddle of Mudd – Spaceship
This is just campy, cheesy fun. Imagine the worst (best?) lyrics of 80s hari-metal and combine it with the 90’s Grunge sound…you’ve got this one. It’s fun…and very catchy. This also has a “Picked” rating from the Fox Pick It or Kick It.

    Default – Turn It On
After a long wait, the badn finally delivered a new album this past fall which delivers more of what you’ve come to expect form these guys: ballads and straightforward rock songs with melody. This a straightforward, angsty rock song that isn’t breaking any new territory for the band, but that hasn’t seemed to hurt them in the past. Enjoy.

ADDED THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 9, 2009

Shinedown – If Only You Knew
Here’s another mid-tempo ballad-like song from an otherwise heavy third album, Sound of Madness. The band turned it up a notch with their latest, and haven’t sacrificed melody to do so. I’d compare this one to their previous single, Second Chance.

ADDED THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 2, 2009

Alice In Chains - Your Decision
The second single from the band’s comeback album…their first in 14 years. Black Gives Way to Blue deals with loss and the emotions included therein, but also has an underlying theme of hope and positivity. This song is classic AIC, with vocal harmonizing between Cantrell & their new singer, Willaim Duvall. It’s actually kinda eerie how closely his voice resembles Layne Staley’s at times while harmonizing. To hear my interview with Mike Inez of the band, scroll down a little further.

The Motorleague - Hymn For The Newly Departed
You’ve likely seen this Moncton band at the Capital for Metal Monday’s, or recently when they opened up for Priestess at Nicky Zee’s (where they gathered everyone around the stage to sing along to their final song…this one). It really is a sing along, which doesn’t take away from the fact that these guys go full bore with their sound. It’s like a  punch to the face that you want again and again… it’s so catchy.

    Colin James - Wavelength
February 3rd, Colin James will be at the Playhouse to showcase material from his most recent album, Rooftops & Satellites. This song is nothing too off the wall for the man; straight forward blues rock. Get your tickets for the show here: The Playhouse.

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: If it’s hard to find a parking spot by the Sears end of the mall…just go home…it’ll help your sanity.

These will be the last new songs added before the New Year. The Full list of the Fox Rock 50 will be posted here once the show airs on New Year’s Eve.

    Merry Christmas!

Our Lady Peace – The End is Where We Begin
The falsetto might be gone, but their fans aren’t. One of Cananda’s most popular bands offer up their second single from their latest effort, Burn, Burn. While they’ve certainly changed their sound a bit since their beginnings, they’ve also seemed to take a more positive approach to their song writingthis is still very recognizable as OLP; just a new direction.

Sleepy Driver - Like A Weapon
This is the second single from their acclaimed album, Steady Now (if you haven’t bought it yet, ask for it for Christmas) Once again, this band shows that the Fredericton music scene is not to be overlooked; and that a well crafted song can make all the difference. Plus, it was unanimously picked on The Fox Pick It or Kick It…so, if you like it that much, we should keep it around right?

WOW…I just realized it’s been a month since my last post…I did the write ups…apparently I failed to post them…. I. am. Sorry....

    This Week:

Green Day – East Jesus Nowhere
The band continues it’s Opera-rock fascination with this active number from 21st Century Breakdown. We’re getting the in-your-face Green Day on this one…not the softies…

    Last Week:

    Switchfoot – Mess of Me
This is the anti-sex, drugs, & Rock n Roll song…or at least, seemingly anti-drug…there’s certainly some good rock involved. Possibly their best song since Meant To Live; certainly a little more energetic. It’s on their new album, Hello Hurricane.

Them Crooked Vultures – New Fang
As Super-groups go, this would be the epitome. Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) have come together to blend their musical styles and offer up something refreshingly different. This is highly anticipated stuff, and was picked during the Fox Pick It or Kick It… The debut album drops Nov. 17th.

    Social Code – Satisfied
This Edmonton band goes a little more hard rock compared to their earlier punk rock efforts, which brings a freshness to their music. This is from their latest album; the aptly titled, Rock N Roll.

    Cavo – Champagne
Sex, drugs and Rock n Roll…I think this one covers it all.

    Grady – Boots or hearts
Yes, it’s that song; he endearing classic from the Tragically Hip is covered by another Canadian Icon. Gordie Johnson and his boisterous Texas-blues band Grady have paid tribute to the hip by giving it their own personal flare. Check out Grady @ Nicky Zee’s Nov. 12th.

    KISS – Modern Day Delilah
Despite there only being 2 original members in the group, this is still KISS (I mean, it’s the two that most people care about anyway!) You likely heard this in Halifax when they performed there and announced the release date of Sonic Boom (Oct. 6), their first new album since 1998’s Psycho Circus. THe song has great guitar hooks and Paul Stanley wails; it’s pretty much like every KISS song you’ve come to love so far…and you picked it during the Fox Pick it Or Kick It…

    Crash Karma – Awake
Crash Karma is a new Canadian super-group. Edwin (I Mother Earth), Mike Turner (OLP) and Jeff Burrows (Tea Party) came together through a mutual contact (Amir Epstein of Zygote) and after all four jammed, they decided a band could be formed. Combining what feels like equal parts of their old bands, it’s a sound you’ll be somewhat familiar with, except slightly different. This is probably the closest Edwin has come to sounding like he did with IME since he left the band.

    Last Week’s Adds:

    Foo Fighters – Wheels
This is a lighter side to the Foos, which I think works. It’s got kind of a Tom Petty Vibe, while sounding a little like Warren Zevon’s Lawyers, Guns & Money. The song is one of two new ones on their Greatest Hits collection in stores Nov. 3rd. (This song was Picked during the Fox Pick It or Kick It)

    Slipknot –Snuff
Speaking of lighter sides to bands…wow! Stone Sour has normally been the Corey Taylor’s outlet for some softer acoustic melody, while Slipknot generally stuck to the metal side of things. Their last album featured Vermillion, and here they go again with an acoustic song that’s entirely moody and serious. Certainly something different; not that it’s a bad thing! (This was Picked on the FOX Pick It or Kick It)

Cage the Elephant – In One Ear
This band carries on it’s Raconteurs like vibe with an energetic number telling their critics what they think of them… (This song was Picked during the Fox Pick It or Kick It)

    Three Days Grace – Break
The bands third album, Life Starts Now, will be in stores on the 22nd and the Fox offers you an album preview here. The song doesn’t really break any new ground for the band, it’s full of driving guitars and a catchy groove that I’m sure will sit well with you…in fact, I know it will; it had a unanimous decision in the Fox Pick It or Kick it! Listen for your chance to Win It Before You Can Buy it!

Billy Talent – Devil On My Shoulder
This is another Pick It or Kick It selection which proved favourable…and rightly so! This is possibly one of the band’s strongest songs to date and offers a bit more of that grown up attitude which makes Billy Talent III their best album so far.

    Wolfmother – New Moon Rising
You picked this one too! When I first heard this song…I didn’t like it; I thought it was boring. Then I heard it again, and it was like a completely different song; I really like its Black Sabbath vibe! Considering many thought the band had broken up (only one original member remains), it’s a surprise they have a new song form a new album (Cosmic Egg) which hits shelves in October.

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: Don’t call the No BS line before the Cue; wait til we ask, otherwise it’ll only guarantee your heartbreak…

    Alert The Medic – Atlas
How bout that East Coast music scene? Here’s more proof that the Maritimes and stand up next to the global greats when it comes to honest, blue-collar rock. Check out this Halifax band on the rise with their latest release, We The Weapon, which comes out on my Birthday; (September 19th) I’ll gladly accept that gift!

Weezer – I Want You To
Weezer have made a great career out of writing and performing short catchy pop-rock songs. Why would they change their formula for the new album? Raditude comes out in October and this is your first taste…enjoy!

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: Just because you do grown up things like get married and buy houses, does not mean you have to stop watching cartoons and eating kids cereal…right?...

    LAST WEEK:

    Colin James - A Man's Gotta Be a Stone
Billy Gibbons might find this one a tad familiar...I'm sure you do, ieven if Colin James didn't intend for it to saound like La Grange. You can can find this on his new album, Rooftops and Satellites, in stores October 6th.

Alice In Chains – Check My Brain
Some of the greatest music news I’ve received in some time was that AIC was recording. It’s been 14 years since they last released an album and they have a new singer who, in my opinion, can hold his own with the band during not only new songs, but the back catalogue as well. Black Gives way To Blue, the new album, drops in September and so far it doesn’t sound like the band has sacrificed that killer sound that made them awesome to begin with. If you don’t believe me check this out too: A Looking In View.

    Matthew Good – Last Parade
At this point, Matt has become a Canadian Icon. He’s blown you away with great albums as a band (Beautiful Midnight) and his solo career only builds on that and gets better (Hospital Music). He’s comfortable, outspoken and funny on stage, which is why we enjoy his live shows (that acoustic set at the Playhouse still ranks in my top 5 of all time) and with each new recording, he  does something a little different while never escaping what defines him as an artist. His latest project is a concept album about the city in which he grew up, and continues to live. Vancouver comes out October 6th and will be streamed on his site (in its entirety) a month before hand. Last Parade is certainly what you’ve come to expect; atmospheric rock with some killer vocals and cool production.

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: If you look around your place and think to yourself: “I don’t really have THAT much stuff”….try packing it up!

    LAST WEEK’S NEW STUFF:
    (Forgive my slacker habits…)

Collective Soul – Welcome All Again
They’re by no means breaking new ground with this one, but when it comes to Colelctive Soul, that’s OK. IN fact, if anything, they seem to be going back to their hey-day with this song. It could easily be something from their first couple albums, especially their first Self Titled realeas (my personal favourite!). The new album comes out Aug 25 and will be self-titles as well (although they’re calling it Rabbit, based on the fact that the cover is a big rabbit…clever)

    The Respectables – Sweet Mama
You might remember this one form their rain soaked performance at Fred Rock this summer. This band proved then that they’re a band worth seeing and the album is just as stellar, evoking some great vintage Rolling Stones vibes. This song is probably the most Stones-like on the album and they certainly throw a bit of Canadiana into the mix.

Inward Eye – Day After Day
If you’re familiar with Thousand Foot Krutch, you’ll be familiar with this bands sound. The falsetto vocal delivery certainly jumps out at you, as does the poppy, sing-a-long chorus. Known for being a premiere live band, you can feel the energy shining through on this song. Check it out!

  • July 29, 2009

    Pearl Jam – The Fixer
This is the poppiest Pearl jam has ever been. They showed some signs of it on their last album and I think this album will be a natural progression. Backspacer comes out in September and this song is a short, punchy pop-rock song which is bound to be stuck in your head…it’s stuck in mine right now. While, at first, it may not be what you’d expect form the Grunge icons, there’s certainly nothing wrong with it and chances are, it’ll really grow on you with repeated listens.

Brendan Benson – A Whole Lot Better
Speaking of poppy rock songs, Brendan Benson delivers his own version of it with this song from his new solo album, My Old Familiar Friend, which is due out onAugust 18th. His writing partner in The Raconteurs (Jack White) seems to have influenced him a bit on this song, as it has flairs of the poppier side of the White Stripes. It’s an incredibly happy sounding song, which is great for Summer and great for any music fan…dig it!

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: Washing out your water-bottle is a good idea…until you’re tasting Palmolive every time you whet your whistle…

  • July 20, 2009

    Godsmack – Whiskey hangover
Well they certainly aren’t breaking the mold on this one…although it’s certainly a return to form after a bit more bluesy territory on their last album. The song is meant to promote their appearance on the Crue Fest 2 tour, which started this past weekend. After the tour, the band is set to record their fifth album, which may or may not include this song; although Whiskey Hangover is certainly a preview of what to expect… Dig it!

    Default – All Over Me
On September 29th, the band will finally release a new album (it’s been four years) and this is the first taste of what to expect. It’s the right mix of pop and rock which the band is certainly known and praised for. There’s a great sing-a-long chorus which is bound to be stuck in your head enough to have you calling in to hear it again and again.

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: Kids’ cereal is still cool as an adult; it’s like having candy for breakfast, but with 7 essential nutrients…

    Green Day – 21 Guns
This is this album’s Wake Me When September Ends, except not as annoying; a ballad from a band that continues to mature with each new release. It was pretty bold to go with another Rock-Opera following the success of American Idiot, but they pulled it off with 21st Century Breakdown and the proof is in songs like this. They have a statement to make and they want you to enjoy hearing it…

Sleepy Driver – And the Gravedigger Says
It’s always wicked to be able to play local music…especially a band like Sleepy Driver! Steady Now is the debut Full-length release and it’s excellent!
If you’ve seen them live, you know what you’re getting here: a generous dose of Folk-rock with great lyrics. They prove that great songwriting is key to great songs…this is one of them!

    Krome – Turn it Up
And now for something completely different…with regards to the sound of the band that is. Anyone who is familiar with the band knows that their sound was a little more on the dark side of 90’s Grunge. This song kind of pays tribute to the prior decade and has the band sounding a bit more like an 80’s Hair band…and I know you love you’re 80’s, so you should love this one!

    Jet – She’s a Genius
Well, it’s been three years, but the Aussie rockers are back! And they don’t disappoint. The return with the edge they had when they burst onto the scene with on 2003’s Get Born. The song is filled with a ridiculously catchy rhythm and chorus that will keep you coming back.

    Thornley – Change
The latest Thornley album is more of a lighter outing than the debut (or anything from the Big Wreck days) but with that comes very focused song writing. The album has countless melodies which are bound to hook you (if not right way, certainly after repeated listens) Give this one a listen or two, and I’m sure you’ll feel the same.

    Kings of Leon – Notion
The Folliwill family continues it’s domination of the music world with yet another fabulous song from their latest album Only By The Night. The album has been on my own favourites list since its release last September, (on my birthday, no less!) and the reason being is that every song on it is fantastic; this song being further evidence.

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: shaving a beard is a great way to appear younger…especially if by wanting to appear younger you want to appear 15!

    Linkin Park – New Divide
You’ll find this song in Transformers II: Revenge of The Fallen (and I would assume, on the soundtrack). Hopefully the new movie will be better than the last one… Song wise, you get more of what you’ve come to expect form the band that is quickly becoming U2 as an Industrial rock band.

Arkells – Ballad of Hugo Chavez
Hugo Chavez is the President of Venezuela…Arkells are a rock band from Hamilton, Ontario…what they have in connection is beyond me; other than a catchy song that is! This is from their debut album Jackson Square, which I can’t say enough good things about…do yourself a favour and pick it up.

Taking Back Sunday  - Sink Into Me
I’ve always found clapping in rock songs makes them even more catchy then they already would be…probably why bands do it. (Plus it makes for a wicked moment at a show!) Taking back Sunday have come quite a way since Cute Without The E and by naming their newest album, New Again, they’re ready to prove that. They also have a new guitarist, who shows off his skill nicely on this great song; which is not nearly long enough!

Our Lady Peace/All You Did Was Save My Life
Well, I read somewhere that the band was making a return the sound of their early stuff for the new album (Burn Burn, out July 21st) After listening to this song; I’d say that was a lie. This song carries on that newer sound we’ve heard from OLP on the last couple albums. That’s not to say that it’s bad; in fact, the new one is incredibly catchy. It may take a couple listens to really get into it, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

Billy Talent – Rusted From the Rain
The band’s third album, aptly titled Billy Talent III, will be available July 14th and this is the official first single…although, Turn Your Back will also be on the album. It’s everything you’d expect from the band: high pitched vocals with a background growl, cool guitars and an insanely catchy chorus. Quite possibly one of my favourite Billy Talent songs so far…

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: Just because you might live near a basketball court and you own a basketball does NOT mean you are naturally good at the game…trust me…

    Chickenfoot - Oh Yeah
Named, I assume, after the variation to the game of Dominos (not really) this is Sammy Hagar's new band; actually, it contains 2 former Van Halen Members as Michael Anthony plays bass. Rounding out the group is Chad Smith (of the Chili Peppers) on drums and Joe Satriani on guitar. This song is pretty much what you might expect from Hagar and crew...sounds a bit like his stuff with Van Halen...which is not a bad thing. They're playing Halifax in August if you want a road trip.

Vince Vacarro - City At Sunrise
Vancouver's Vince Vacarro (Vinny, as I like to call him) offers up up a sound that is similar in style to fellow Canadian rockers Matt Mays & Sam Roberts. Imagine those two mixing together, and this song has been described...

Green Day – Know You’re Enemy
No, it’s not a Rage Against the Machine cover (how cool/weird would that be?) This is the first song off 21st Century Breakdown, which expands on the themes of American Idiot. According to Billy Joe Armstong this song is “a rallying song. It’s about liberating yourself from a lot of (bull) that you see on TV.” The new album drops May 15th.

Andrew Hunter & the Gatherers – Feel Good Song
This one arrives just in time for nicer weather. In fact, the song itself is about a feel good song for the summer…think we’ve found it! These guys are from Halifax and will be playing various places throughout NB & Ns this summer…check ‘em out!

Cage the Elephant – Ain't No Rest For The Wicked
If The Raconteurs and Beck had a baby it’d be called Cage the Elephant…Love it!

    ACDC – Anything Goes
No, this is not CCR…but it certainly has that vibe. ACDC are known for a particular sound; there’s no denying that. However, the fact that after 36 years as a band they can still keep you entertained is a testament to the success of that sound. So, to change it up slightly could cause alienation… but the fact is, after 36 years, to give your sound a slight twist is refreshing and a testament to the longevity of this band. Black Ice has been a hugely successful album and this is one of the (many) bright spots on it; certainly gives you another song to look forward to if those rumours of Moncton are true…

Shinedown – The Sound of Madness
This is the title track from their most recent album (the same one that gave you Devour and Second Chance) and what a smoker! What’s especially cool about this song, aside from the completely aggressive versus, is the surprisingly upbeat chorus. Just when you think the song is going one way, they change it up (just slightly) and in all honesty it causes you to pay more attention. This is another stellar song from a stellar band!

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: If you’re April Fool’s prank is to have everyone believe you’ve broke up with your significant other…make sure he/she knows about the prank in advance…

    Pop Evil - 100 in a 55
This is not a song about my driving habits. (but how awesome would that be!?) Pop Evil are a band that were definitely influenced by grunge (just listen to the dude's voice); personally, I think they sound like 3 Doors Down. So if you like that band, you should like this one. They're planning to re-release their debut, called Lipstick on the Mirror, which will include a couple bonus songs (including an acoustic version of this one)

    Everest - Reloader
I bet you're going to Neil Young in Saint John next month going "I wonder what the opening band is like"; this is your answer. Their debut album, Ghost Notes (Now available), is perfect for a laid back night of just chilling! It's filled with lots of mellow goodness, but also some great upbeat moments. Reloader is one of those moments, and it's easy to see why a tour with Neil Young is a great fit!

Crash's Words of Wisdom: The day following St. Patrick's Day should be a holiday....

    The Ending – Freakshow
The Ending are not to be confused with The End (a metal band from Mississauga); nor should they be confused with This Ending (a Swedish Death Metal band). For this song, think Psycho meets Nothing to Lose… the song starts off with a Billy-Talent-like guitar sound,  Then the vocals come in and it’s a bit more reminiscent of Puddle of Mudd’s most recent success. The band itself is actually a new project for former Platinum Blonde front-man Segio Galli… thankfully it sounds nothing like his former band…yikes!

    Pearl Jam – Brother
Even old Pearl Jam rocks!! This song was originally meant for release on their debut album Ten, but wasn’t. It was then released as an instrumental on 2003’s Lost Dogs. Now, the band has updated the lyrics a bit and are planning to finally release the song properly (along with a few other bonus songs and goodies) on the re-issue of Ten (due in stores on March 24th) This definitely has that Ten-era sound to it (to which many are thankful) and it only makes me look forward to more new stuff from the band (even if this is technically an old song…)

Offspring – Kristy, Are You Doing OK
Yeah the Offspring can rock, we know that (Hammerhead) and yeah, The Offspring can be ridiculous (Pretty Fly For a White Guy) But The Offspring can also be sentimental and soft (not that there’s anything wrong with that!) This song shows that the band has range and that no matter what, we’re gonna like them!

    LAST WEEK’S ADDS:

Tragically Hip – Love is a First
It’s almost as if Gord Downey took one of his Live rants and turned it into a song! The chorus is pretty catchy though; makes me wonder what the rest of the new album has in store. On April 7th, we’ll find out when We Are The Same hits the shelves.

    Inward Eye – Shame
Fresh of a performance at Nicky Z’s opening for Mobile, the band is also added to The Fox Rotation. Their live show is all the rage and with catchy energetic songs like this, it’s not much wonder. They kind of give off an early-Our-Lady-Peace kind of vibe with the falsetto vocals (which, at first, may be kind of off-putting…but I’ll be darned if I didn’t have it stuck in my head wanting more! )They have a self-titled EP available out there…check it out!

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: Just because there’s a 1-in-9 chance of winning something doesn’t mean buying 9 at once will work… (Current Roll up the Rim count: 1-18)

  • February 25, 2009

I apologize that this section hasn't been updated in...Wow, a month!

    I'm a slacker...obviously...

Just because I haven't updated it doesn't mean we haven't added any new stuff... quite the opposite actually.  Here are some songs we've thrown into the FOX rotation over the last month:

Joel Plaskett - Through & Through & Through
On March 24th, Joel will release his very ambitious new triple album, 3. The album includes songs with triple titles (Deny, Deny, Deny; Through & Through & Through; etc) as well as normally titled songs such as Wishful Thinking (which he debuted live in the Foxhole while here for the ECMA's) A month after the album release, Joel will be stopping in Fredericton for a show at the playhouse on April 22; Tickets are available here

    Papa Roach – Lifeline
This song makes me want to phone a friend... and there’s a 50/50 chance that a friend wants to phone me....I’m an idiot. Sorry for the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire reference, but I just saw Slumdog Millionaire and it’s on my mind (Great movie! Dunno if I’d have given it best picture though) ANYWAY, Papa Roach have really changed their style since the early rap-rock days of Last Resort. They’ve tapped into their softer side once more (not to say this song is slow and soft, just not as aggressive lyrically as some of their past material... actually it kinda sounds like Buckcherry)

    Saving Abel - 18 Days
Speaking of a softer side, Saving Abel (all the court troubles aside) tap into their own soft side for this one. Their debut, self-titled album has a parental advisory on it, despite the fact that the big words aren’t really featured too heavily on it (sounds like a marketing ploy!) They’re currently on tour with Nickelback & Seether.

In Flight Safety - Model Homes
This Halifax band won the 2007 Rising Star Recording of the Year at the ECMA’s for Coast is Clear. They were also nominated for a Juno and have really lived up to the rising star promise. With a new album (We Are an Empire, My Dear) having been released this past January they look to continue their success and with songs like this, it’s almost certain they will.

Theory of a Deadman - I Hate My Life
I’ve said it before, but the day this guys is happy is the day this band won’t have music to make! This one is kinda comical though and it’s basically a feel good song about forgetting your troubles and having a good time...

Rise Against - Audience of one
I’m waiting for the joke about this one being about my show...haha. This is also a softer side to a band known for strong guitars and a growling yell of a vocal delivery, but as they’ve proven before (Swing Life Away) they’re not always so intense (although, lyrically, that doesn’t change). You’ll find this one on Appeal to Reason along with Re-education (Through Labor) which you’ve most likely already heard on the FOX!

Crash’s Words of Wisdom:  Don’t procrastinate...you’ll just end up doing more work eventually anyway...

    Metallica – Cyanide
Death Magnetic was one of the louder albums of 2008… it was also a much better album than St. Anger. That said, Cyanide proves both statements to be true as the band cranks it to 12. ( I know the reference is 11, but…c’mon, that’s been done.) This song would be my worst nightmare on guitar hero; it changes paces several times within 7mins. It’s almost like 3 different songs combined… not that I’m complaining.

    The Trews – I Can’t Stop Laughing

This song is all about fun! Considering the band is from Antigonish, NS, it’s not too much of a stretch to imagine them playing this one at a kitchen party somewhere. It definitely captures the essence of such a party with its happy go lucky feel. The gist of the song is: have a drink and have some fun…don’t let anything bother you! It’s the perfect companion to the weekend!

U2 – Get On Your Boots
U2’s first album in 5 years is set to hit stores on March 2nd and for months the speculation (and word from the band itself) has been that this was going to sound a lot different than How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. So, despite being grammatically incorrect, Get on Your Boots is definitely a different direction for the band. Anyone who is expecting 80’s/90’s U2 may not find what they’re looking for, but if you give it a couple listens I’m sure you’ll realize that, although the bands ways are mysterious…they’re on to something.

The Respectabiles w/ Gordie Johnson – Sugar

It’s funny that the name of the song is Sugar, considering it kind of sounds like something BIG Sugar would’ve done in their day. However, when you have Gordie Johnson (formerly of Big Sugar) not only producing the album, but also lending his voice to the song… I suppose comparisons are bound to pop up. That isn’t to say that The Band doesn’t offer up some of their own flair.

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus – You Better Pray
Right off the bat, the band turns up the energy and wails…literally! This is a straight-ahead rocker from a band who have probably been better known by their work appearing in video games (Madden NFL ’07, Saints Row, etc.) This song has a great guitar riff and will likely be stuck in your head in no time. You’ll find it on the band’s new album, The Lonely Road, due in stores Feb. 3rd.

    Starewell – 28
I wish these guys would come back to Fredericton to play for us! They may be |Broke & Out of Money”, but they shouldn’t be… not with songs like this. They’ve proven they can rock out, so with this one they slow it down a bit…for half the song; in the middle they turn it up and go for speed. It’s a change that catches you off guard, but it’s certainly welcome...as are they, any time they want to come back to town! Check out their alum: Broke & Out of Money!

    Disturbed – Indestructible
You’ve heard one Disturbed song, you’ve pretty much heard this one, however I think there was a bit more thought put into the melody of this one…it’s actually quite catchy…and has a guitar solo.

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: The “is” for your status on Facebook can be deleted now… there’s no reason for it to appear in sentences unless it makes complete sense.

Theory of A Deadman/Not Meant To Be
At this point, these guys do a Nickelback song better than Nickelback. It’s certainly no secret these guys have been compared to their label-mates, and with good reason, as on this one they do have that familiarity, but it’s almost like the band is taking the sound that was made famous by Chad and the gang and turning it into their own thing. On this ballad, singer, Tyler Connolly continues his trend of heartbreak… if this guy ever writes a song about being happy in a relationship…it’s over!

    Thornley/Make Believe
It’s only been 5 years since Thornley released Come Again; the debut album from the former Big Wreck front-man. So, since five years aren’t exactly 15, I won’t call Tiny Pictures (the new album)  this bands’ Chinese Democracy… but it was starting to get that way for me. Tiny Pictures will be released in February and Make Believe is just a little something to tie you over. PS -> Here’s hoping Thornley comes back to Fredericton to rock our faces off in ’09!

    Kings of Leon/Use Somebody
The band is finally getting some notice on their home turf! For so long, they’ve been an American band that has been much bigger in Europe than back home. The tides are beginning to turn with their latest album: Only by the Night. Sex On Fire made it into the top 20 on the Fox Rock 50 and was one of the Fox’s most requested songs in ’08. Now the band wants to put their stamp on ’09 and I think it’s a worthy song to do so. PS -> The whole album is wicked!!

    Franz Ferdinand/Ulysses
The title is just fun to say. Actually, the song itself is fun to listen to; it has a cool build to it that starts out sounding like something Nine Inch Nails might master, then turns into something vaguely familiar (definitely sounds like Franz Ferdninand). You’ll find this song on the bands new album, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, which comes out January 26th.

Arkells/ Oh, The Boss is Coming
If you haven’t heard of these guys before; you’re not alone. They’re a band from Hamilton, Ont. and just released their first Full-length album, Jackson Square, on Oct. 28th. They met at McMaster University in 2006 and have made a name for themselves touring out west with Matt Mays & El Torpedo. This song, at first listen, kind of reminds me of Foo Fighters, which in my opinion is NEVER a bad thing! Hopefully they’ll make an even bigger name for themselves and come our way soon; until then, turn ‘em up with the FOX!

    Airbourne/Diamond In The Rough
While this band has often been compared to fellow countrymen ACDC, they don’t mind. In fact, their opinion is: if you want to compare us to one of the best Rock n Roll bands around…go to town! Personally, I get much more of a Four Horsemen/Jackyll vibe from them, especially on this song. Basically, if you combine the sounds of tall the bands I’ve mentioned so far, you have a pretty good idea about what to expect on this song, so there’s not much I can say about it, except…I think you’ll like it! It’s on their album, Runnin’ Wild.

    Nickelback/Something in Your Mouth
Yes, they’re suggesting that… Suggestive lyrics aside, it’s much more a of a rock song than Gotta Be Somebody (thankfully). I’ve always preferred the harder edged Nickelback to the sappy love ballad Nickelback anyway, and let’s face it; they know how to write both and make them catchy. This song is their new album’s Animals: a fast paced hard rocker about sex. By the way, the new album, Dark Horse, comes out Nov. 18th. Catch the Fox Sunday Night 8 o’clock special on Sunday, Nov. 16.

    Seether /Breakdown
Remember way back when, when Amy Lee of Evanescence wrote the song “Call Me When You’re Sober” and said it was about Seether’s Shaun Morgan? Well, this song could be seen as retaliation…although no-one’s really going to admit it. The band keeps up their Nirvana vibe (albeit a much more produced version), and they recently added a new guitarist to make them a four-piece again. They’re celebrating their 10th anniversary as a band and may be releasing a compilation to commemorate it which would include some original demos, B-sides and stuff released back when they were known as Saron Gas.

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: Persistence pays off… that’s why I’ve begun bugging people about Christmas presents already!

    Rise Against/Re-Education (Through Labor)
Rise Against have touched various political subjects in the past, including Environmental degradation and animal rights (Ready To Fall). This time around they’re going after labor violations, and they’re doing it in the classic Rise Against way:  melodic meets militant! The song is as catchy as anything, but it has a slight edge to it that is sure to keep your adrenaline pumping.

Billy Talent with Anti-Flag/Turn Your Back
You may recognize this one form NHL 09. It’ll also be featured on Billy Talent’s upcoming 3rd album (wonder what it’ll be called?...Billy Talent 3??) which is due out sometime in March. The band doesn’t stray too far from the mold on this one; it’s an upbeat , guitar driven song with the type of chanting vocals the band are best known for (along with Justin Sane & Chris #2 of Anti-Flag). The song reminds me of my days as a pirate… or what my days as a pirate might have been like had I actually ever been a pirate…

    Guns N Roses/Chinese Democracy
Gone, are all original members of the band (except for Axl Rose) and so too is the sound most closely associated with the band.  I guess that’s what happens when you don’t release an album for 17 years. Don’t get me wrong, there’s no denying it’s GNR, but then again, Axl’s vocals are pretty unmistakable. What’s different is that it sounds much more modern; Axl is singing a little lower (although he does hit the high note in an opening wail); guitars are a little chuggier (is that a word?); it actually kinda sounds like Velvet Revolver…slightly. Over all, though, there’s no denying it’s nice to finally hear something from an album that’s been so long-awaited. Let’s just hope the album does actually come out this time; it’s set for November 23rd. Dr. Pepper fans rejoice!

    The Trews/Man of Two Minds

No Time For Later is, personally, the best Trews album to have been released. So far, from the album, we’ve heard the heavier side of the band with Hold Me In Your Arms; we’ve heard what the Trews do best with Paranoid Freak; and now it only makes sense that we get the softer side and it sounds familiar enough that there’s no question it’s a Trews song. While, at first listen, this song may seem to be about loving two people, it could also be about loving both a woman and a band(and the life it brings); hence the line of “living opposite lives..” I’m just the DJ, not an interpreter, but the songs is great; of that, I’m positive!

    Shinedown/Second Chance
While Devour, the first song from Shinedown’s new album, was probably one of the heaviest songs they’ve written, Second Chance sounds more like the Shinedown we know from songs like 45, or the Skynyrd cover of Simple Man. The vocals have a power behind the delivery and the music only elevates it to a point that you feel something listening to the song (that, to me, is what makes a good song.) You’ll believe what the song is trying to say and it doesn’t feel forced. It’s one of my favourite new songs in the last little while, hopefully you’ll agree.

Econoline Crush/Get Out of The Way
Remember when Econoline Crush was kind of an industrial hard rock band? (see: sparkle and Shine, Home, etc…) So do I, and while they’ve kind of changed their sound a bit in recent years (Dirty) this song still has hints of the industrial sound that brought them attention; plus it’s ridiculously catchy. This song has a great sing along chorus, plus I’m a sucker for a falsetto, (No-one does it better than Raine Maida USED to) so this song contributes to a great week of new music at the FOX. And it comes at a great time, because Econoline Crush is currently opening for Alice Cooper… Maybe they’ll do this song when you check out the show in a couple weeks.

Crash’s Words of Wisdom: If you find yourself at a “crossroad” and don’t know where to turn… check the map.

    Nickelback/Gotta Be Somebody
It feels like Nickelback just put out an album, although that could be because they released almost every song on All The Right Reasons. Never the less, this song is from their new album, due out Nov. 18th, called Dark Horse. Judging by the lyrics, Chad is looking for love (apparently the groupies have nothing to offer him anymore) and again looking to climb the charts because this one is so catchy, you’ll be calling for it in no time.

    Kings of Leon/Sex On Fire
Speaking of catchy songs, here’s the new one from the guys who are probably best know for The Bucket. If you haven’t heard of that song, then this one might get your attention. From the bands new album, Only By The Night, it’s certainly catchy and yet I’m having a hard time comparing it to anything… it’s slightly different in a good way. This band of brothers, and one cousin, have delivered a song that caught me off guard; I like when that happens. By the way, the album is pretty stellar as well.

New Music For The Week of September 16

    Oasis/The Shock of The Lightening
The shock would be if these guys didn't fight or argue with anyone over the course of this album...but I'm sure they did. Regardless of their personal conflicts though, they continue to put out music that is reminiscent of their previous work. They're still sounding a bit like the Beatles, but at this point I think they've established an Oasis sound...which this song certainly embodies. The new album is called Dig Out Your Soul and comes out Oct. 7.

    Offspring/You're Gonna Go Far Kid
This is my favourite add of the week. I've always found the Offspring's songs catchy, and this one doesn't disappoint. This song is from their "grown up catalogue" (as opposed to their childlike fun section: see Pretty Fly for a White guy) The band took four and a half years to release this album (Rise & Fall, Rage & Grace) after spending at least two writing the songs. I think the wait has pulled off, as this is yet another great song that will be stuck in your head.

    Metallica/The Day That Never Comes
Metallica return with a new album. St. Anger pretty much sucked, so it's nice that they return to a better drum sound and guitar solos. This song is like a modern day One; slow and soft to begin, cranked to 11 for the second half. I like it, and the new album, Death Magnetic is out Friday.

    ACDC/Rock n' Roll Train
Another long awaited release form the force from Down Under! Black Ice, the new album and first in 8 years, comes out Oct. 20th along with a world tour. Until then...All aboard the Rock n Roll Train!

    Matt Mays & El Torpedo/Building A Boat
This is the perfect song to open an album. It grabs right formt he start adn is as catchy as anything Matt has written. THe new album, Terminal Romance, may just be my favourite Mays album so far...and songs like this are the reason.

    Staind/Believe
Staind’s 6th studio album, The Illusion of Progress, contains some of the most positive lyrics he’s ever written; while still maintaining a bit of the angst that has made them famous. The band set out to make one of the heaviest albums they’ve ever recorded and in the process came out with something much more musical; probably one of the bands most diverse. Then first single is certainly what you’ve come to expect form the band; a power ballad in the vein of It’s Been Awhile/So Far Away/Right Here. The one big difference out of all of those songs is, Aaron Lewis’ lyrics; he seems to get more optimistic with each album.

    Buckcherry/Too Drunk
Here’s one to get ready for the weekend. Buckcherry are known for being a party band, so it only makes sense that their songs would be about that lifestyle; I think the title says it all.  The song is kind of a funky-blues-jam with a straight ahead rock chorus that’ll have you singing along (provided you’re not too drunk) and it’ll no doubt be huge @ the bars! The new album, Black Butterfly comes out September 16th.

    Weezer/Troublemaker
This a perfect song to kick of Weezer's latest, The Red Album. It's kind of an introductory song in the vain of My Name is Jonas and really sets the mood for the whole album; if nothing else, it's certainly an anthem for troublemakers everywhere! Weezer knows a thing or two about writing catchy pop-rock songs and they certainly don't disappoint here because, in case you haven't figured it out yet; they're really good at it!

    Mobile/The Killer
Here's a smoker for ya! Mobile have a new album, Tales From The City, which comes out in October and this is the first song from it. They sort of borrow a line form the Smashing Pumpkins' Disarm ("the Killer in me..is you") but the two songs really don't sound a like at all. The band promises to show a different side of Mobile with the new album and I think it's  step in the right direction. Check it out!

    Age of Daze/Overrated
Celebrity Life can be fun..but and it can also be annoying. That's what Tim & The guys of AOD are talking about in this song about "Young Hollywood". The band wrote this one in Toronto with Mike Turner (Our Lady Peace) and it's a rocker with a hook and melody that'll keep you coming back for more. (It's already requested almost every night on the Fox 8 o'clock Request Fest) The band, from Fredericton, recently signed a distribution deal which means it'll be easier to find their album, Hollywood Ending, and you just might see their videos on Much Music. (coming soon)

    Coldplay/Viva La Vida
This is Coldplay, being Coldplay. While I thought Violet Hill was a wicked song, it was a little different in sound for the band (which I have no problem with) but this one is more along the lines of the hits the band is known for. It's the title song form their new album and it's what Chris Martin and the rest of the boys call the "best song we've ever written" along with Clocks; find out why.

    3 Doors Down/Train
The band is smokin’ in this one and, in all honesty, it may be my favourite song to date by these guys (well..perhaps a toss up with Loser). It’s certainly a song worthy of opening an album; as it does on the bands self-titled fourth album. The vocals will be familiar, but the rest is a bit different. They’ve turned it up a notch of two and delivered a guitar driven rocker; not something I really think of hearing from 3DD, but glad I have.

    Tarl/The Social

At first I thought: “interesting choice for a band name.” Then I realized that it’s actually this singers name (interesting choice for a name, period!) After focusing too long on the name, I listened to the song and realized that unique name or not, the guy can write a song! Tarl is from Vancouver and has delivered a song that is perfect for the summer. It’s fun, its upbeat and, even better, it’s catchy! I know, those ingredients don’t ALWAYS equal a good song (ex: Click here) but on this one they do! You’ll be requesting it before too long…just wait.

     Sloan/Believe In Me
Sloan’s last album, Never Hear The End of It, was their longest ever (30 songs on 2 discs) Their newest album, Parallel Play, just happens to be their shortest; not that there's anything wrong with that. This is the first single and sounds very much like Sloan; perhaps with a hint of an Oasis influence (which I think They’ve always kinda had anyway) Oh yeah; Patrick sings this one!
