Spring Yard Cleanup

The City of Fredericton’s annual “Spring Yard Cleanup” program will be held during the weeks of May 7 and May 14, 2012. If at all possible, the pickup will occur on your regular garbage day. Anyone wishing to dispose of yard waste should note the following guidelines:

• Limbs/branches are required to be separated from other refuse so it can be shredded. Branches should be no bigger than 5 cm x 1.5 m (2’ x 5’) and loose brush must be tied in bundles.

• Individual bundles or items should not exceed 1.5 m (5 feet) in any dimension.

• Mass should be not greater than thirty 30 kilograms (65 pounds) per item or bundle.

• Garden refuse, etc. should be in containers as required for domestic garbage. (Plastic or vinyl garbage bags, securely tied, of a capacity of not less than 50 litres nor more than 90 litres).

• Citizens are asked not to place yard waste at the curbside until the weeks of the pickup.

• The spring yard cleanup is not intended to provide for pickup of major items such as furniture, stoves, refrigerators, bed springs and mattresses, or residue from major tree removal or major clearing operations.

• For those who wish to take material not meeting guidelines to the Fredericton Region Landfill at 1775 Alison Blvd. The landfill is open Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

My Backyard: Photo Gallery

My Backyard: Brian Atkinson and Michelle Davis on exhibition from May 4 to June 8, consists of color photographs of rural communities in Honduras and New Brunswick. Atkinson’s work captures the faces and landscapes of St. Andres, Honduras in the midst of a local controversy over gold mining in the area, while Davis documents the effects of mining in Penobsquis as well as the anti-shale gas exploration protests in the rest of the province. While their messages are similar, these artists are on opposite ends of their photojournalism careers. Atkinson has been a freelance photographer for more than twenty-five yeas, in over seventy countries, for a variety of magazines, newspapers and international aid agencies, including CARE, CUSO and MSF, while Davis’ exploration of the media has just begun. Michelle Davis has been the owner of ChoraChroma PhotoGraphic, a photography studio based in Fredericton, for the last two years. Her work has recently expanded into photojournalism. She began following the ant-shale gas movement over a year ago when a hydro-fracking company announced that they would be setting up operations in her hometown of Astle, near Boiestown. She photographed the initial rally that was organized to protest exploration in Penobsquis and since then has covered a number of shale gas protests. My Backyard: Brian Atkinson and Michelle Davis opens on Friday May 4 at 5 p.m. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, and Fredericton Campus.

Move-a-Thon

On May 17th, Nashwaaksis Middle School will be hosting its first Annual School Wide Move-A-Thon. In support of our School’s goal to promote lifelong Health and Fitness, the Physical Education Department as well as the Methods and Resources Department is hosting a Fundraiser involving students at Nashwaaksis Middle School walking, jogging, or running to raise funds for our equipment and program enhancement.
The main purpose of this event is to promote the importance of Physical Activity regardless of athletic ability. We feel that we can achieve this by educating our Youth on Healthy Hearts and proper nutrition while reinforcing the importance of INDIVIDUAL Goal setting in the pursuit of lifelong Fitness.
•The Day of the event, all students will make their way down to the upper 400 meter track and challenge themselves to run (or walk) as many laps as possible in a 30 minute time period. Based on their collected pledge donations, participants will raise funds to support this crucial cause.
•All participants are encouraged to set individual goals for this event while enjoying some time with their friends, eating healthy snacks and valuing the benefits of daily physical activity.
•Half of our participants will also be receiving Blood Pressure Tests which are operated by UNB Student Nurses.
Since physical activity and healthy lifestyles is affects all members of our community, we are reaching out to you for your help in not only supporting this event but also actively participating in it as well!
As mentioned, goal setting is an important part of our theme for this day and with the option of “per lap” donations, we would like to ask for your support in donating 10 cents for every lap completed on this day. This would likely amount to a total of $300.00 if every child in our school (630) completes 5 laps within the 30 minute time period.

The stage will see performances by the Belle Comedians, and Where Rivers Meet, both of which feature SHS alumni; in addition, there will be performances by current students and teachers with other alumni. The Fredericton Motorcycle Club is hosting our 28th Annual TOY RIDE on Saturday, June 9th ; rain or shine
This is to aid the Child Life Unit at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton.
Please bring a new, wrapped toy. If you prefer to make a cash donation you may do so during registration.
Registration : 9:00 A.M. – 10:15 A.M.
Cost : $15.00 per person, BBQ lunch included
Location: Please gather in the parking lot of Canadian Tire, Two Nations Crossing (Fredericton North). Prizes are available to registered participants. Drawings will take place at the end of the ride.
Ride Route: We will depart the Canadian Tire Two Nations Crossing at 10:30 A.M. sharp and travel to Stanley via Route 8. We will stop for lunch in Stanley at the High School. There will be a Show and Shine at the school. Everyone is invited to come and have a look at the motorcycles during our stopover in Stanley. We will then return to Fredericton via the Royal Road and the Westmorland Street Bridge, continuing up Regent Street to the DECH for Presentations & Prize Draws.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of Special Olympics has partnered with the Knights of Columbus where a breakfast at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 170 Regent Street will be taking place on Sunday, June 10th from 09:00 am to 1:00 pm. The meal will include scrambled eggs, sausages, pan fries,pancakes, beans, toast, juice, coffee, and tea.
Cost: Adults $6; children $3, families $20.
You will be served by various law enforcement personnel from various agencies and you will be greeted by some of our athletes. All proceeds will go towards the Special Olympics in support of upcoming games.

Attend one of our Amphibians Workshops and learn about the fascinating world of frogs and some of the research techniques that biologists use to study them. Following the workshop you’ll have the chance to get your hands dirty, experiencing what being a field biologist is all about. You will help contribute to an actual study on the Grey Treefrogs in Canada’s premiere Amphibian Reserve: Hyla Park in Fredericton.

Capital city volleyball camps is a volleyball camp that works on both beach volleyball and indoor volleyball skills. It is held at Leo Hayes and the Willie o ree beach courts. The cost is $220 as child for a one week camp. We will be holding three camps, July 9-13 is a co-ed camp for middle school students, July 23-27 is a female camp for JV high school and August 6-10 is for JV high school males.
